Interview with Laura Kiddo - REV KIDDO band, Düsseldorf, Germany

Authentic. Optimistic. Maverick.  Three words which would describe REV KIDDO, an alternative rock band based in Düsseldorf, Germany, the best way. Founded in 2016, the group, including vocalist and rythm guitarist Laura, drummer Kon, lead guitarist TJ and bassist Kat, found their own way to express their personal experiences through music. Severe and relentless lyrics, shrouded in a vesture of optimism, which are revealing a questionable status-quo, but simultaneously demonstrate an approach of the described situations. Dashing riffs switching to dreamy licks, driving drums uniting with melodic basslines. Above all this, Lauras voice is hovering and she is telling stories. Stories about transformation, progression and the will to push yourself through.

Music&Art Press : What does REV KIDDO stand for?

Laura Kiddo : REV stands for reversed and KIDDO for childish or goofy. The band name is based on a cool story, when a friend of Kat and mine – another musician from Boston – was visiting us. We were putting together plans for a common band project and we were already planning our live shows including for example the construction of the instruments on stage in detail etc. So Kat was saying: „The drumset will be placed right in the middlefront of the stage, you will stand behind it and sing and drum with one hand at the same time...“ and other, let‘s say, uncommon ideas for a live gig. We went totally crazy and our friend said: „Wow, you are some…. reversed … Kids!“ So we figured: Well, there is something cool about doing things in a reversed way.

Music&Art Press : What are your idols or influences?

Laura Kiddo : The influences of the band members are so various, which you can also hear in our songs we create together. Our idols vary from the Foo Fighters, The Police, Sting, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, but also Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Haken, Nina Simone, Etta James and further more. TJ played in a death metal band before…

Music&Art Press : When I was listening to some of your live performances, you seem very tight and full of positive energy. What is your secret?

Laura Kiddo : Thank you! Of course we practise a lot, at least twice a week, but above all the energy comes from performing our own songs, which mean something to us. This energy transfers to the performance. We are just having a lot of fun!

Music&Art Press : When you are creating songs, are you doing this on your own or all together with the whole band?

Laura Kiddo :  Of course there are times, when you are sitting at home, having a moment of inspiration. You write it down and present it to the band at the next rehearsal. Sometimes a song develops out of this, sometimes we create something in a jam. We like the jamsessions a lot, because everyone has to improvise and there is not much time to think about what you are doing – that reveals the most authentic music.

Music&Art Press : What are the upcoming plans for your band? What projects are approaching?

Laura Kiddo : We will release our first single called „Hazed & Confused“ of our upcoming EP in the second half of this year! We are very excited and are preparing ourselves for the time in the studio!
